The unpaved, rugged road and parking lot of Las Islitas might leave some overly cautious travelers wondering exactly where they are. But journey forward because this is one of the great beaches in Nayarit, lined with numerous little beach shack restaurants and souvenir vendors. Matanchen Bay is recognized for its big waves, great for surfing. It’s also a great beach for toddlers to build sandcastles and everyone else to splash around. The little restaurants are called “ramadas” and you should feel comfortable eating here. You can also pack a picnic lunch and enjoy the day.

Bring your bug spray. If the winds are calm, you’ll have unwelcomed critters munching on your arms and legs.
