Maymont is a 100-acre Richmond treasure filled with tours of a turn-of-the-century mansion reminiscent of the Dowager Countess from Downton Abbey, Japanese and Italian gardens that careen way beyond spectacular, a Children’s Farm with pigs, goats, and horses, a nature center focused on Virginia wildlife that will keep kids absorbed for hours with turtles, adorable otters, snakes and more, and wildlife — like American bison, owls and black bears — sprinkled throughout the green acreage.

Maymont opened to the public in 1926 after the original owners donated the property to the City of Richmond. The stunning property hosts events galore including the annual Richmond Jazz Festival, scavenger hunts, and an elaborate Easter and Christmas event. Bringing a picnic isn’t a bad idea and a camera is a must.

Admission is free, but special events have a fee. Open daily in April through September from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and October through March from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
