Looking for something meaningful to do with your vacation time — maybe some high school students need some volunteer hours to look good on college applications? Or do you just want to teach your children about the fragile nature of these coastal communities like Wrightsville Beach?
This office includes a small exhibit on the ecosystem of the barrier islands. But most importantly, the staff coordinates activities and events for those living or visiting the area who want to get involved in clean-up and restoration. Maybe all you do is pick up oyster shells that will later be used to rebuild reefs, or maybe you can help plant sea grass on the dunes. The variety of projects is dependent on a number of conditions, so check out the website in advance of your visit and see what you can do.
