Off-Road Jeep Exploration

Kaiolohia Bay, , Lana'i, 96763, HI

To see some of the further-afield sights on Lana’i, you’ll need to rent a 4WD Jeep for the day. While I wouldn’t subject preschoolers to bumpy roads and a long day of sightseeing, I think school-age kids might get a kick out of playing “Indiana Jones” for the day. Top sights to see include Shipwreck Beach on the north side of the island, where an old Navy ship was run aground; you’ll also want to hunt for ancient rock art (petroglyphs) here. Then there’s the Garden of the Gods rock formations on the northwest side of the island, and Polihua Beach, which is often deserted — but not good for swimming, as the waves are often quite rough.

You’ll need to take all of your snacks and drinks on your day of Jeep exploration, as there are no facilities at these remote places on Lana’i. The Dollar Rent A Car staff will have a very detailed map for you to follow when you rent your Jeep (roughly $169/day).
