Located in the historic district of downtown Basseterre, the capital of St. Kitts, cruise ships pull right in to this port complete with rainbow-hued buildings featuring shopping and dining. Stores offer clothing, accessories, souvenirs, jewelry, electronics, cigars and more, but restaurants, bars and a casino often are crowded when cruises arrive. Steps outside Port Zante is Basseterre, for more authentic goods without as much color or cleanliness. Basseterre was built around the “Circus,” a circular town square that was once the place to hobnob with plantation owners.
