Sacsayhuaman

Attraction

The pronunciation of these ancient ruins high over Cusco is pretty funny (say: sexy woman). And if your kids are older and ambitious, you could consider hiking up from town (about 30 minutes from the Plaza de Armas). If not, bus rides arranged through group or private tours are a much easier way to arrive.

It’s impossible not to be awed by the circa 15th century ruins of a fortress complex here (the largest ever built by the Incas), and you’ll wonder how on earth pieces of stone this enormous were put into such perfect placement. After you’ve checked out the ruins, coax the kids to walk a bit farther to a panoramic viewpoint for impressive views of the Andes and Cusco.
