Family Activities:

Shelter Island

Attraction

Nestled in the waters between Long Island’s North and South Forks, just a ten-minute ferry ride from Greenport, sits the peaceful retreat of Shelter Island. Less than 30-square miles, a third of which is dedicated nature preserve, Shelter Island is home to unspoiled beaches, country roads, and a laid-back, island vibe.

A great way to explore is on two wheels, so a stop at Picozzi’s on Ferry Road to rent bikes is a must. Pedal out to one of the town beaches — Crescent Beach and Wades Beach are both good choices where families will enjoy the soft sand and gentle waters. Both offer restrooms and lifeguards, which are always a plus.

Another option is to discover Shelter Island’s calm waterways by kayak. Paddle through the protected beauty of the island’s sheltered creeks, harbors, and saltmarsh either on your own or with the great folks at Shelter Island Kayak Tours. Finally, Mashomack Preserve, which occupies more than 2,000 acres on the island, is a fabulous destination with 22-miles of hiking trails, interpretive walking trails, and engaging nature programs.
