Feel free to take a self-guided tour of the South Unit–but if you want to hear interesting stories about history and Teddy Roosevelt, get a guide to show you around. Keep an eye out for buffalo and wild horses…and also for rattlesnakes, who have been spotted in the area. Take a few hours to drive the 36-mile scenic loop, stopping for hikes and photos along the way.
