St. Michael’s Church

71 Broad Street, Charleston, SC

The oldest church edifice in the city, St. Michael’s Church stands on the site of the first Anglican Church built south of Virginia in the 1680s. Over time, the church grew into the large structure that stands today, which was constructed between 1752 and 1761.

Its 186-foot-tall steeple actually sank 8 inches due to an earthquake that hit the city in 1886. The church’s clock, imported from England in 1764, is considered to be the oldest functioning colonial tower clock in the U.S.
