Winchester Mystery House

525 S Winchester Blvd, North San Jose, San Jose, CA

No one should miss an opportunity to visit the Winchester Mystery House. Owned by the same Winchester family that invented the Winchester Rifle, its story goes like this: Sarah Winchester lost her infant and husband and sought the help of a fortune teller who explained she was cursed. She told Mrs. Winchester that if she wanted to confuse the spirits of the dead killed by the guns, she should never cease construction on her home. Following the advice, Mrs. Winchester carried on construction 24 hours per day, seven days per week up until her death, 38 years later, creating random rooms with stairs leading to nowhere, windows overlooking other rooms, a room with one entrance, but three exits and other oddities.

Hour-long tours walk you through multiple rooms of the 160-room house, only showcasing a fraction of what exists. Grand Estate Tours also provide tours of the Victorian Gardens, the Historic Firearms Museum and the Specialty Gifts & Antique Products Museum.

The house is open for tours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a 7 p.m. closing from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
