Overview

Clean and spacious rooms are a hallmark of BEST WESTERN properties. The centrally located BEST WESTERN Bidarka Inn is no different, providing a reliable experience for travelers to Homer. Ideal for a family is the Inn’s standard two-queen room, which can sleep five guests with the addition of a crib or rollaway. Every room has a refrigerator, microwave, coffeemaker and a newer pillowtop bed. The hotel serves up a free hot breakfast buffet each morning in the Glacierview Room, where you can’t help but stare at the magnificent scenery outside the picture windows. It sort of makes up for the lack of a view from your room. Other amenities include free Wi-Fi, fitness center and a guest laundry room. Parents will appreciate the Otter Room Bar & Grill, the onsite restaurant that specializes in local seafood dishes like halibut and salmon, for lunch and dinner.

The Bidarka Inn has a great downtown location that is close to shops, restaurants and several sites of interest. Half a mile down the street is the Alaska Islands and Ocean Visitor Center, the best place to start your visit to Homer. Here, you can learn about the sea life in the area through hands-on exhibits. From the Center, follow a winding nature trail through the trees to a wetlands and tidal area. Just beyond is Bishop’s Beach, a fun place for kids to beachcomb for shells. A little further on from your hotel is the Homer Spit, a 4-mile-long sliver of land that sticks out in Kachemak Bay. Here you’ll find the ferry terminal, hiking trails and the Homer harbor, where you can board a fishing charter, whale watching cruise or simply rent kayaks. While on the spit, check out the Sawlty Dawg Saloon, one of the first cabins built in Homer, and recently made famous on the TV show Deadliest Catch. There’s a lot to discover in Homer, and the BEST WESTERN Bidarka Inn is a convenient and comfortable base from which to explore.

Our first impression of Best Western Bidarka Inn wasn't a good one. After traveling for half the day we arrived with reservation in hand a couple hours before check-in for a business meeting we had scheduled that afternoon. We explained to the person at the front desk that we were very tired and needed to freshen up beforehand, and that we'd like to check in early. But to our displeasure the person at the front desk told us it was 'too early' and to come back in a couple hours.

Seriously?! Apparently the room wasn't ready, but really? There's not one single room in all the the 200 or so other rooms you have that is ready? Best Western is in the accommodations industry, isn't it? So couldn't one expect this ch-ch-chain hotel in Homer to be a little accommodating for road weary travelers?

Sadly, in this case at least, we found this not-so-very-Best-Western's hospitality DOA and non-responsive. And must say that in 50+ years of life, personal and business travel across the U.S. and Canada we have never had a hotel tell us we had to "come back later." But the not-so-very-Best-Western Bidarka in Homer did. Where is the love, people? So we were left having to go to a restaurant and use their public restroom to freshen up. Thanks, not--so-very-Best-Western Bidarka Inn. We really appreciated that....

That said, once we did get in the room was nothing special, but clean and reasonably priced. No complaints. And my companion said the other front desk person she spoke with was much friendlier and more accommodating than the first. Will we stay at the not-so-very-Best-Western Bidarka Inn again? Hmmmmm, good question. Maybe. But only as a last-on-our-list option. We'll look else where first, because we'd rather pay a little more for some genuine hospitality and a staff that actually makes us feel welcome. If nothing else is available, however, we might stay here again. But you know what they say: "You never get a 2nd chance to make a first impression." And the not-so-very-Best-Western Bidarka in Homer AK didn't make a very good one on us.
