The Yin and Yang of Resorts
by notsogrumpy
I certainly expected more from Club Med. When I booked this trip, Punta Cana was rated in the top ten for kids. They certainly don't rate that from me.

Have you ever walked into a room/suite and said "oh, this is really okay and they've ... more updated the bathroom"; then as you look closer, you say "oops, why is there a tile on the floor and why doesn't the shower door close all the way?" Being a good guest you turn in a maintenance request. 5 days later, all that has been done is that you've picked up the tile from in front of the shower.

There are two restaurants and there's no choice as to which one you can eat at. Both are buffets and both had a lot of food that was generally good. One, Samana, was always dinner. It was clean, tables fully set, the help actually helpful. The other, Hispaniola, was the exact opposite. The tables were never fully set, no matter what time you arrived for breakfast and lunch. The salt, pepper, sugar containers were never full. There was hardly a complete table setting to be had. At least at the tables that were open to use. One lunch, one lunch in 5 days, we actually found a table that was set as it should have been. The help were too busy to wait on the guests because they were setting up for the next meal. I'm still not sure who was using all those tables they were so busy working on. If you were lucky enough to find someone to ask for coffee or water or anything, maybe you would get it, maybe not. Mostly, you had to fend for yourself. The absolute worse though, was the dirty glass/mugs. Three days of dirty drinkware. I finally spotted the #2 chief of the village and showed him how nasty they were. The next day he told me the glass washer had not been working right. No one had noticed???

I had paid for a Deluxe Suite which entitled me to have a stocked refrigerator. BUT, I wasn't aware of that because we never got it on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. On Monday, one bag of chips and cokes, sprite and other sodas showed up. When I asked why I had not be getting the refrigerator service, there, of course, was no answer. On Tuesday, I called twice for someone to come and stock it and 4 hours later, someone from the bar brought a few hot sodas. Heads up...there is no ice available unless you go to the bar and get it for yourself. There are ice buckets, but no one tells you that there is no easy way to get ice.

Which leads to another problem....they just don't communicate. You pretty much have to luck out and discover some of the ins and outs for yourself. And understand this: English is the third language and if you don't speak Spanish, you cannot communicate with the general help. The GOs are at least capable of speaking and understanding English. Club Med definitely geared to the French guest. By the way, if you're turned off by topless 60+ year old women, don't go.

I discussed my complaints and offered "suggestions" to Barq (#1), #2, and #3, but I doubt any of it actually will ever be acted upon. I tried to remain open minded about the flaws and tried to give them some slack because it seemed like they were trying to correct some of the problems. But I'm not so forgiving now. I called Club Med US to voice my dissatisfaction, and sent an e-mail to "guest relations" and am still waiting for some sort of reply. I tried to fill out the feedback survey, but when I checked "poor" as to how I rated my experience, on the next page, it stated that there was a problem with the web site and I could not go any further. Yeah! Sure!

The whole experience has been disappointing to say the least. On the positive side, the Gos were great, the food was good, the location terrific. That's about it. Can't wait to see if I hear from guest relations and how they handle the services I paid for and never received.

Incredibly Disappointed - Will Never Visit Club Med Again
by LBinVA3773
This vacation will go down as our worst vacation --- ever. We had stayed at the Club Med in Cancun and loved it. The one in Punta Cana was a different story. We switched rooms once and begged to switch again but was told nothing was avialable. ... more Both rooms were moldy and had broken ACs. We were told we would have ocean views, and the second one did. However, the AC never worked in either room. We called the front desks over 20 times, we went down to the front desks to talk to supervisors, we had multiple maintenance people come by who basically just played with the controls, and I wrote a three page hand-written letter the the manager of the resort, a Mr. Barq, and I never got any sort of response. We slept in humid, 78 - 80 degree temperatures each night. I barely slept more than 4 hours any one night and just had to lay there sweating. I begged for fans - but nothing. We heard many other people complain about their AC and the condition of their rooms as well. Not all of the staff was rude - some even were very helpful. However, I found many of the front desk staff rude and/or unable to do anything to help. Every time I asked to speak to a manager or supervisor - they were not available. If we could have left after two days, we would have gladly done so. But we would have been heavily penalized by the airline so we decided to tough it out.

On the plus side - the grounds are absolutely lovely - perfect condition. If only the same person in charge of the grounds were in charge of housekeeping and maintenance - we might have had a different experience. The day we checked out (and could not get anyone to help us with our bags so we had to drag down the steps and to the check-out area which was a good 300 yards away) an American woman came running up to us. She had just checked in and saw us coming out of her building. She said "does your room have mold all in it and is the AC working?" We just sympathetically smiled at her and shrugged. "Yes", we kindly told her,"our room was full of mold and the AC never worked in the seven days we were there." We hoped she was more successful than we were in getting the AC fixed or her room changed.

Apparently there are some amazing all inclusive resorts in Punta Cana that are comparably priced. PLEASE check these out first! We heard wonderful stories on the plane ride back from people who had stayed other places. We loved Punta Cana, we just had a terrible experience at Club Med there.

Been to better...
by nickiwoldy
This is the 2nd largest Club Med in the world, and it feels like it! Our hotel room was so far away from the pool/beach that we would pack up everything possible that we'd need during the day and would not return to our rooms until it was time ... more to wash up for dinner.

Our visit was during Christmas, and it was 100% full - which created other problems. Although the staff was VERY nice, there just wasn't enough of them to keep up with all the visitors' needs. We waited a min. of 2 hours to get anything delivered to our room, at meal time (all buffets) we were constantly waiting for tables to be cleared and re-set for "new" diners, and used plates weren't cleared in a timely manner. Food was good, nice selection, lots of fresh fruits, etc. After visiting other Club Meds... i'd say - pass on Punta Cana.

Club Med - Punta Cana - 2 Families with 4 Children
by cfoley8000
We flew from Washington DC to Punta Cana direct (Super Easy with 4 kids ages 1 to 7), and were met by the Club Med directly outside of the gate. They gathered our luggage and loaded us into the van to Club Med. We were greeted with refreshing drinks and ... more taken to our room. We signed up the kids for Kid Club that night and ate at one of the 2 buffet resturants on the premises. The food was great for Buffet style and the staff were wonderful.

The kids club was great for all the kids. We have shy to very outgoing kids and they all loved it. The staff was so sweet and kind and the kids loved the activies. I have to say it is NOT a place to go dump your kids while you sit on the beach and drink cocktails. The kids loved it. They did treasure hunt, participated in two shows on the huge stage (big one on Saturday), did circus school, they took the kids sailing. It was great, and all the kids didnt want to leave kids camp.

The only issue I have was with the food. I am not a big fan of buffet style food. It was delicious and very fresh, however, I find it similar to grazing at the trough with the others.

The place is very spread out, so our place which was up by the achery/soccer field was hike. But I guess we walked off the delicious crepes we ate every night.

Bottom line: Great for kids, quick nonstop flight, dont go for the dining experience.

Perfect Family Vacation
by jillville
We spent a week this past Spring at the Club Med Punta Cana, and I have to say, the place exceeded our expectations. We loved the resort. The rooms (which had recently been renovated) were perfect for our family of four. The food was ... more spectacular and there was always a variety, which also changed nightly. The instructors at the kids club were friendly and fun and made sure to make our two little ones feel included. I really cannot say anything bad about the resort. I would go back there in a heartbeat.

Our First Club Med Experience
by bebrody
We had been to all inclusives in Mexico and Dominican Republic before and enjoyed them. Club Med Punta Cana was a level above the rest.
The kids activities were superior (soccer, archery, roller blading), the equipment was in mint ... more condition (brand new tennis racquets), and the instructors (aerobics, boating) were top notch. When my husband hurt his shoulder, one of the sailing instructors gave him some stretching exercises that helped.
The food was excellent but the resort should do something to keep the flies away.
