Overview

Atop a cliff on the Southeast of Barbados sits the Crane Residential Resort, with its sweeping views of the sparkling azure waters and the pink, powder soft sands of the world famous Crane Beach. Built in 1887 — and fully restored and expanded in the 20th century — this resort combines the perfect amount of seclusion, old world charm and luxury.

The resort offers two types of luxurious accommodations to choose from including the 1887 resort apartments and private residences. Crane’s 1887 resort apartments include charming oceanfront rooms at the original historic hotel. Several room sizes are available, each featuring authentic antique furnishings and balconies with stunning ocean views, while some also feature fully equipped kitchens. Private residences provide the ultimate holiday escape, with spacious rooms, the finest furniture and finishes, fully equipped kitchens, private Jacuzzis and amazing ocean views. Ground floor residences feature full-sized infinity pools, while Crane’s two-bedroom residences feature private plunge pools.

Not 5 star as advertised

We stayed at the Crane for a family long weekend. Unfortunately it disappointed more than delighted. While our room was nice enough it was not up to the standard of a 5 star hotel - amenities were sub par, cheap paper products and Kleenex that didn’t fit the available holder. That said our two bedroom suite was acceptable. But where this hotel really slips from is in its service which was lacklustre at best. One rainy day we inquired about umbrellas to get from our room to the main area; we were told there were none, only to pass several hotel employees walking with hotel umbrellas as we hurried past in the rain. Not one offered up their umbrella or an escort. The restaurant food was generally only fine and the atmosphere in the main restaurants was lacking. When we went to the pool the towel hut was out of fresh towels - and the hotel was not busy enough to justify this. Add to this a very rowdy neighbour in the suite next to ours - it felt like we were at a very different hotel than the one we expected. One bright spot, the room service staff were excellent. Next trip to Barbados we will likely check out another hotel unless reviews improve in the meantime. The raw ingredients are there but this hotel needs to remember that going from good to great all depends on service.
