Special Place In My Heart

by cindyfromdubuque

Fillenwarth Beach is the sort of place for families and people that love the lake and lake activities. It’s been around for more than 100 years and many who stay come back over and over again. We have been one of those families that started bringing our kids here while they were growing up. It’s been about 10 years between our previous stay and this visit.
The positives:
The lakeview from many of the rooms.
You stay at Fillenwarth’s for the activities: Sunrunner cruise, million dollar home boat and history tours, water skiing lessons, sailboat rides, peddle boats, crafts for young and not do young etc, eyc, eyc.
Location near Arnold’s Park means you could park your car for several days and walk it to restaurants and shopping a couple of blocks away.
Many different style of rooms if you plan ahead.
The negatives:
The property is on a hill around the lake so lots of stairs and walking for those not up for it. There is some accommodations to allow for guests to get to the dock area.
The rooms are so so. The rooms/units small and camp-ish or motel-ish. If you are used to nice hotels and all inclusive resorts - this this not that. The room is not why you stay at Fillenwarth’s.

My husband and I stayed over a long weekend celebrating an anniversary. It was a good amount of time to do what we wanted to do.

Not good for a retired couple.

This is an old-fashioned resort. Our room was like an Ozark resort cabin—inexpensive furniture, bare-bones furnishings, everything a bit cheap and uncomfortable. That would be okay for an inexpensive vacation but this cost $500 a night. Swim deck is good for families and those who love a lake. The lake is beautiful and very clean. The “events”included in the resort price are sorta cheesy. The location is good. You can walk to restaurants and the amusement park. No walkable grocery or even a 7-11 type store. In short, great for some but not very good for us.
