Take a walk along the beaches of Fort Walton Beach on Florida's "Emerald Coast," and you'll quickly understand how this coastal region earned its nickname. The waters of the Gulf of Mexico emulate the deep green hues of the classic gemstone, and yet are so clear it's easy to spot schools of minnows as they dart about in the surf. However, even though the beach is a natural draw for visitors to Fort Walton Beach, it's not the city's only attraction.

Founded in 1937, Fort Walton Beach is filled with historical and cultural attractions plus, not surprisingly, many outdoor recreational opportunities. Families will find plenty to entertain both kids and parents, ranging from museums to water sports to animal encounters and more.
