Located on Ireland's West Coast (or the Wild Atlantic), Galway, once a large fisherman's town, is now a seaside destination with a large cultural city center. Galway City grew from a small fishing village, called The Claddagh (yes, just like the jewelry), considered one of the oldest former fishing villages in Ireland dating back to the 5th century. Unfortunately, the growth and expansion of Galway was the end to the Claddagh and eventually the end to most of Galway's fishing industry in the early 1900s.

Today, the seaside bohemian town offers pretty beaches in the Salthill section of Galway, and Galway's city center features that traditional Irish vibe with pedestrian streets lined with restaurants, shops, street performers and museums.

Families will love to visit Galway in the summer months and take a boat tour of Galway Bay, stroll the promenade along the coastline or Quay Street to hear some Irish music, or visit the Galway City Museum or Katie's Cottage in the Claddagh to learn about the town's history.

The Cliffs of Moher (a must-see when visiting Ireland) are only about a 90-minute drive south of Galway and Dublin is about two and half hours east.

For families seeking both the beach and the city, plus traditional Irish culture, Galway is your go-to destination in Ireland.
