Overview

Just because the Gangehi Island Resort is the island’s only resort, doesn’t mean guests shouldn’t expect to enjoy a luxury vacation. While the two person, over the water villas are very secluded, they still offer flat screen televisions, DVD players, iPod docking stations, coffee makers, air-conditioning, minibars, and unrivaled ocean views. Two onsite restaurants serve international cuisine, and guests can embark on a fishing excursion to catch their own dinner. The reef around the island is a phenomenal spot for snorkeling and diving. Black tip sharks, sea turtles, and eagle rays regularly make an appearance. Families can also arrange to snorkel with whale sharks.

The good and the bad

by ina15092017

I have just spend 10 days on Gangehi and this was my fourth time on the island. This will likely be my last stay there, though.

The 4 stars are for all the great staff they have at this island - the waiters, cooks, room boys, gardeners and bar staff. They are friendly and go out of their way to ensure the guests are fine. Also the beach villas are great and always clean. They are right on the beach and each has 2 wooden sun beds and an umbrella. These could be in better shape but I assume that is difficult in this climate.

The restaurant is serving nice food, plenty of salats and always fresh fish. There is also a pasta station in case one doesn’t like the rest of the food. The best are the desserts though, especially the fresh ice cream every day.

The reef is not in great shape but there are plenty of fish so there is lots to see including schools of parrot and doctor fish as well as quite a number of sharks and turtles. It’s easy the get to the reef on either side of the island.

As far as management and customer relations are concerned, the rating would be a 2 or lower. The customer relations person picked me up and then was not heard or seen again. Considering the size of the island that is quite a feat. The last three stays the people who had the role checked in regularly.

On my last day the management refused to let me stay in my room for 2 more hours after check-out time to make sure I was comfortable. Their offer was to pay 60 USD to be able to remain in the room. Since I refused to pay, I had to sit at the reception for nearly 4 hours before I got picked up for my flight. Considering this was my 4th visit, I was very disappointed and I doubt I will consider booking this resort again.

Paradise

We just recently concluded a week stay at the Gangehi Resort. We chose this location for our honeymoon vacation and could not have been happier with our choice.

Hotel rooms and facilities
We chose the Garden Villa which was spacious, equipped with all things that you would need during a stay on the Island. The bed was huge, the A/C in the room was very efficient and managed to keep a nice a cool temperature in the room.
All other resort facilities where also kept tidy, having a very specific Island “theme” that made you feel very well.

Hotel staff and service
This is where Gangehi really wins their guests. I will ran out of adjectives to describe how warm, friendly and welcome everyone has been. Every single staff member always wears a smile on their face and make you feel like royalty.
Special thanks to Venka, Raja, Seelam (I hope I got the name right), our room boy and Karma at the SPA.

Food and drinks
The resort offers mostly typical European cuisine and if you are picky you might find it a bit boring after a couple of days. We however tried to eat smart, not to taste everything on the first day and really managed to get our “rotation” right.
The in-resort Thari restaurant serves very good drinks and the food there (we tried once the Lobster and Beef stir fry) is tasty and nicely served.

Activities
The resort offered a wide range of in and off Island activities for guests. Paid excursions to nearby reefs, diving activities for certified divers, trips to nearby local Islands or to open Ocean in search of marine life. All those are supported by Italian born divers and marine biologist who are very friendly and on the spot to answer all questions.
The on the Island pass time can be spent on snorkeling in the reef surrounding the resort full of various marine wildlife (fish, sharks, stingrays, turtles, etc.), the resort also offered kayaks and surf boards free of charge.
Also two times per day an instructor led yoga sessions and a paid SPA with various treatments (my wife took one session with hot stones and was really satisfied).

Summary
Together with my wife we started to plan our return to Gangehi already as it will always have a special place in our hearts. Thank you for a honeymoon to remember!

Side note
We were part of a larger group of Polish tourists and a few of them displayed absolutely all the worse traits during their stay showing no respect to the hard working staff of Gangehi. I feel obliged to apologize for their behavior on behalf of all the other Polish tourists. Please don’t think bad of us :) there are black sheep everywhere.
