TripAdvisor Rating

Gateway Canyons is a remote, luxurious oasis located in the Unaweep Canyon, a canyon many claim to be one of the most unique red rock canyons in the world. It makes for stunning views from every location of the resort. The resort notes that this is said to be the only canyon in the world that is drained by two creeks, East Creek and West Creek, simply adding to the beauty and diversity in activity available at Gateway Canyon Resort.

Onsite activities include three outdoor swimming pools, hot tubs, plenty of sidewalks and lush gardenscapes with ponds to walk and bike along. There is kayaking, hiking, climbing, horseback riding, mountain biking, fishing, snowshoeing, and more available through programming at the resort. And, a newer addition to the activity options is a sky adventure from a bird’s eye view in a helicopter with views of spectacular red rock canyons, monoliths and mesas, snowcapped mountains, lakes and rivers.

A unique perk of the resort, and an attraction that draws day visitors, is the Gateway Canyons Auto Museum, home of the one-of-a-kind 1954 Oldsmobile F-88. There are more than 50 cars; models and surrounding displays offer a rare glimpse into the beauty and history of the American automobile.

Palisade Ranch is associated with the resort and located just up the road, with 500 acres and a network of well-marked Colorado horseback riding trails that climb over 1,500 feet in elevation. Riding lessons are available for both beginners and those with horseback riding experience. Another perk families enjoy — every Saturday morning is a real Old West experience as guests help the resort’s cowboys and cowgirls gather the cattle off several hundred acres of the scenic landscape and drive them back to their corrals. Advance reservations are required.

When it comes to lodging, the options come in everything from multiple room one-bedroom casitas to inn rooms to two-story stargazing accommodations. All are luxurious, well kept, stylish and very comfortable. There is plenty to choose from for dining selections onsite. While some of the restaurants rotate hours during different seasons, there is a main restaurant, pool bar and food service and breakfast options. You need not leave the property if not desired — everything is located onsite, including a convenience store with food, produce and last-minute items.

For the age-appropriate, there is also a full-service spa and onsite workout facilities.

Nothing Compares

The location is scenic, remote, beautiful and relaxing. The staff does a great job of making you feel warm and welcome and the accommodations are fantastic. We had a small group of us travel there for off roading and had a terrific time. the women could spa while the men went off roading.

It's like they want to be high-end, but just haven't figured out how to...Most of the staff are friendly enough, but just not helpful and don't seem to know what's going on. Maybe going at the end of their season left us with whatever staff they could round up?

Key Issues: Rooms not ready upon afternoon arrival, complete lack of meeting room readiness (this was requested prior and they "couldn't seem to find the reservation"), only one restaurant open - poorly staffed, incorrect food orders, lack of knowledgeable staff ("I think someone else does that?")

Key Features: The surrounding landscape is nice, the rooms are nice/updated, the staff who know what they're doing are very accommodating/helpful
