Want an authentic Old West experience? Book a stay at the Historic Occidental Hotel & Saloon in Buffalo, Wyoming. Famous guests of the hotel have included Buffalo Bill, Butch Cassidy and the Hole-in-the-Wall Gang, and even Theodore Roosevelt, long before he became president.
Guestrooms, while updated, look as though they might have when the hotel opened more than 135 years ago. Each room is different in décor, too. While most rooms feature one bed only, the Stewart Clear Creek Cabin is a nice option for families. Wi-Fi is free.
While at the hotel, be sure to dine at The Virginian Restaurant. The kids will also love the old-fashioned soda fountain (and other treats) at the Busy Bee Café onsite.

This hotel will take your breath away!! Whether by it’s amazing history or the famous guests who slept here, or the beauty of the antique furniture and collections around every corner.
Sleep in Suite 55 where Hubert Hoover frequented when visiting Buffalo or ask for Theodore Roosevelt ‘ s Suite. Other notoriously famous guests were Calamity Jane, Butch Cassidy and his hang, Wild Bill Hickock and Buffalo Bill Cody to name just a few.
Don’t forget to pick up a copy of the book,
THE OCCIDENTAL in the gift shop or at the front desk.
The Virginian is the formal dining of the hotel and is located 2 doors down. Be sure and make a reservation and ask to be seated in one of the front window private seatings. The food is not amazing (except for the asparagus) but the ambience and romantic aura that surrounds you compensates!
If you’re just in the mood for a burger or sandwich, eat in the saloon where you’ll be serenaded by live music.
Buffalo is one of the best little western towns we visited don’t miss it!
Traveling through Wyoming on our way to Montana and chose this overnight stop based on reviews. So glad we stayed here!! We got the Clear Creek Room which was so comfy and charming. Loved the furniture and decorations. The carpeting was so plush and soft and the king sized bed and bedding extremely comfortable. Our bathroom had a claw footed tub and the way the floors creaked, it truly felt like we were stepping back in time.
So much history in this hotel. We were truly fascinated with everything. We especially loved the respect and quiet the other guests gave each other considering the walls are quite thin.
Wish we could have stayed longer. It was the first night of our vacation which got us off to an excellent and memorable trip!
We highly recommend this hotel to all travelers for the incredible experience of the Old West!
