Handicapped accessible room, wasn't

by Aj M

The only thing accessible about this accommodation was the large bathroom and doorway to it. 1.) To begin with, the toilet seat was too low, 12" high at best, making it hard to get on and off of. The ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) says the standard toilet height must be 17”-19” floor to bowl rim, including the seat. Therefore, the toilet was in violation of the ADA 2.) There was nowhere to sit in the shower. Noticing that, I went to the front dest to ask for a stool. Hotel didn't have any-- not even footrests at the pool.
3.) The bed was too high for me to get into. So, I attempted to use our cooler as a stool by lifting one leg onto it with both hands. That didn't work, because I suddenly found myself painfully falling to the floor...landing on my side, on the carpeted, hard, concrete. Ouch! It took an excruciating half hour, full of shouting in pain and crying in frustration, for my husband to help me roll over so I could get onto my hands and knees, crawl to the small chaise, and get on it in order to sleep there, propped up by pillows. No extra blanket in room, so husband brought me 2 large towels to keep warm. I was exhausted and slept reasonably well.
The second night I started sleeping on the chaise, having obtained a blanket from the front desk. After an hour, I woke up because the chaise was uncomfortably lumpy. So, in the dark, I wheeled over to the desk, cleared an area, and slept there... using a pillow for my head.
Needless to say, this stay was a bad experience. Room was nicely clean, tho'. Kuddos to the maid! Location is good, next to the freeway that is a straight 5 minute drive into downtown.

Uncaring, Dismissive Staff

I checked in. There were no customers in the lobby and not a lot if cars in the lot, so not overly busy. I was not greeted as a Spire member and not offered reward points as welcome amenity. I asked about this when checking out and the desk lady dismissively told me that they would show up eventually. Her attitude indicated that I was wasting her time. This is NOT the level of customer service I have come to expect from IHG. I have other choices when I come to St Pete. In the future I will exercise that choice.
