Okay for a Night or Two

by Alan B

Our birding group spent a night here, which is about as much time as you would want to spend in this depressing city. The place was adequate for our needs. It is a maze, and my wife and I were in a room on the ground floor way back. A member of the staff had to guide us there. The room was small, with two beds that took up much of the space. There was a rod with hangars and some shelves to put things, but no place for the luggage except the floor. The air conditioning worked well, once we figured out how to operate it with the remote. The room was clean. There is hot water in the hand-held shower, but not in the sink. The sink is the raised bowl kind on a wooden counter, and there is no place to put the soap except on the counter. Towels are not of the best quality, just adequate. The hotel does not provide bottled water in the rooms, but there is a water cooler in the lobby. It was empty when we went to dinner but had been refilled by morning.

The restaurant and bar are in a separate building, which is mostly not air conditioned. Our group had dinner in a private room which did have AC. The dinner menu was quite extensive, and the food was good and the portions large. The service was okay, but with some problems. The appetizer arrived after the main courses, and the white wine was room temperature. The breakfast buffet was quite large, with lots to choose from.

This is probably as good as it gets in Puerto Maldonado.

Don’t come here

If I were a backpacker, I suppose this place would be okay...but I’m not a backpacker. It’s dirty, smelly, and the salad bar is sitting out in 90 weather without being cooled at all. Eat at your own risk. Outside walkways are very pretty but that’s about the one plus they have going for them.
