Overview

Located in the Poipu area on Kauai’s sunny southern side, the Outrigger Kiahuna Plantation Resort sits right on the beach and in a prime tourist location.

All the units are equipped with full kitchens, making the Outrigger Kiahuna a true home away from home. You can stock up on groceries to enjoy food in your room, out on the lanai, or right on the beach. Additionally, there are BBQ grills located throughout the beautifully landscaped open spaces on the property.

When you feel like venturing out for food or shopping, you’re in luck because there is a shopping center right across the street that features a number of different eating options and shops. Additionally, there is a large shopping center less than a 5-minute drive down the road.

For those looking for a more 4 or 5 star resort feel with lots of planned activities, amenities, and cocktails on the beach, the Outrigger Kiahuna Plantation would not be the right fit. However, for families looking for condo-style accommodations with easy beach access and beautiful grounds in a convenient location on the island, the Outrigger Kiahuna Plantation is great!

Reviews

Great location

by Kerri H

We stayed here for a week on our visit to Kauai. Had a room with a view of the beach. Great location on Poipu Beach with sand. Short walk to shops and coffee outlets. Only draw back is the noise that the cleaners make with talking and running back and forth with their golf buggies. Sunsets are amazing. Good for families to stay in this complex

Great for babies and their parents

Kiahuna Plantation

A very baby friendly and spacious accommodation, the Kiahuna Plantation & the Beach Bungalows will satisfy you and your family’s budget.

When I booked on via the United Miles site, I requested a crib for our 5 month old daughter and sure enough at check-in, they made it possible.

Our unit was on the Poipu Road side of the property overlooking a well-groomed lawn and a tiny view of the ocean from the lanai. The living room is spacious enough to accommodate your mother-in-law comfortably on the couch that pulls out into a sofa bed. The kitchen has enough amenities to bake a pizza, make a smoothie, microwave a burrito or chill all your drinks. I highly suggest stocking up on groceries at Big Save in Koloa or you’ll spend $52 on fish tacos and a burger for lunch at the Marriot’s Honu Bar next door!

Yes there’s no AC but you can make due without one as the shade of the tree and the fans inside keep the temperature comfortable enough.

There are about 20 cottage like buildings each comprised of 30 units and while the interior and exterior are built to last, some of the furniture could use a liitle more TLC.

The beach is about a 2-3 minute walk away and your kids can surf in front of your beach bungalow through Outrigger Resorts if you happened to book that well in advance.

The Kauai Surf School fronting the each offers lessons and soft board rentals. Just next door to the the Ko’a Kea hotel is an excellent surf spot called Waiohai but be sure your experiences enough before paddling out.

There is ancient Hawaiian village called the Kaneiolouma which being restored to its former likeness complete with fishponds, sporting arenas and temples.

If upscale shopping is more your thing, there’s Koloa Landing nearby about a half-mile away.

Overall the Keahuna Plantation is a comfortable stay, great for families, situated in the right place and won’t break your wallet.

Family Activities

Beach Hut
Located just a few steps from the beach edge, you'll find the beach activities hut. Complimentary towels and beach chairs are available here. There's also a decent amount of community beach toys (like buckets, shovels, etc) to share. Snorkeling equipment and boogies boards are available for rent and some small snack items are available for sale. The beach hut is also a place to enquire about ocean conditions.

Beach hut hours of operation vary by season. Contact front desk for hours of operation.

Poipu Beach Athletic Club
The grounds at the Outrigger Kiahuna Plantation Resort are lush and spacious. So, there is plenty of space for kids to run around. But, there are no pools or fitness amenities on property. Instead, resort guests have access to the Poipu Beach Athletic Club.

The club is located across the street, which is a short drive away or a rather long walk depending on where on property you are. At the club you'll find tennis courts and a pool. The pool is more resort-style rather than a typical basic fitness center pool. The waterslide and shallow sand bottom pool are favorites with kids.

The Athletic Club is open 6am-7pm, 7 days a week.

Family Dining

Plantation Gardens Restaurant and Bar
Plantation Gardens Restaurant and Bar is the only on-site dining at the Outrigger Kiahuna Plantation, conveniently located near to the lobby. The restaurant is actually a beautifully restored estate that once served as the plantation manager's home. There's a variety of seating, all located within the Moir Gardens.

The bar opens daily at 5:00pm with dinner service beginning nightly at 5:30pm. Guests will find Pacific Rim cuisine on the menu with regional Hawaiian influences. A kids' menu is available with options like chicken tenders, stir fry, pasta, tropical smoothies and juices.

In-Room Dining
One of the biggest perks about condo rentals is the full kitchens available. You'll find many small markets and large chain stores (including Walmart & Costco) on the way to the Outrigger from the airport. So, you can stock up on snacks & groceries, for easy meals in your room. If you'd like, there are even large grassy areas on property with nice BBQ grills so you can grill out with a beach view.

Nearby Restaurants
The location of the Outrigger Kiahuna Plantation resort is a HUGE perk for families. If you want a break from in-room dining or the on-site dining, there are quite a few dining options nearby. Right across the street (within walking distance or a two-minute drive), is a shopping center with a handful of dining options. And, just down the road (a 5 minute drive), you'll find a large shopping center with even more restaurants.

The Art of Smart Timing
Kauai's busiest months are during the normal busy holiday season and summer travel months. The high season generally runs from December through spring break (early April). During the holidays, you can expect to pay the highest rates for airfare and rooms. The summer months (mid-June to mid- August) make up the next highest season in terms of rates and number of visitors to the island.

For the best bargains (and actually the best weather), the fall (September through November) and late spring (mid-April to mid-June) are the best times to visit the island.

For those interested in whale watching, plan your trip between January and April. During the height of whale season, whales can often be scene from the beaches around the Outrigger Kiahuna Plantation resort.

Getting There
The Lihue Airport is the only one main airport on the island. Once you fly in there, renting a car is a must. There is a clearly marked shuttle area to take you from the airport to the rental car areas.

On the way to the Outrigger Plantation from the airport, plan a stop at a grocery store to stock up on groceries/snacks to fill the kitchen. There are a number of shopping areas along the way, including a Walmart and Costco.

As you head down to Kauai's South Shore on the way to the resort, you'll pass through the very scenic Kauai tree tunnel. Have a passenger be ready with the camera.

Getting Around
Visitors to the island do need cars to get around and there is complimentary parking for guests at the Outrigger. Given that this area is a popular tourist part of the island, there can occasionally be a little traffic build-up. But, generally, getting around is quick & easy. You can pick up maps and get directions from the concierge.

Within just a few miles of the resort, you'll find numerous sight-seeing destinations, beaches, museums, etc. Plus the Poipu Shopping Village, The Shops at Kukui'ula, and Old Koloa Town are all a short distance from the resort.

For Mom and Dad
If you have a babysitter and are able to get a night away, there is no shortage of great places to check out nearby. You could always start with the Plantation Gardens onsite, but if you're looking to explore a bit, the Beach House Restaurant may top the list and is just a short drive away. This fine dining location sits right on the beach and serves up Pacific Rim Cuisine. Over the years, it has won a whole host of awards.

If you're looking for something within walking distance, the Sheraton Kauai Resort is located right next door to Outrigger. It's home to RumFire - a beautiful dining experience with 180-degree views of the beach -- truly romantic settings!
