Texans really are friendly!
by jagshaw
Earlier in the year, at a school auction, we purchased a vacation package in San Antonio. Included in the package were 2 nights at The Westin La Cantera Resort, 4 tickets to Six Flags Fiesta Texas, and a few other perks. We arrived on a Friday evening, and ... more were immediately greeted by a valet (self-parking is available, but is located a fair walk from the hotel, so we opted for valet parking). Check-in was reasonably fast. We were offered a room near the pool, which we accepted. It also was near the elevator (good for when you have 2 young children). The room had 2 double beds, as we requested. We also had requested (via the hotel website) a small refrigerator, which was not in our room when we arrived, but it was delivered quickly after a call to the front desk; although it would have been nice to have the refrigerator already in the room and running when we arrived, it was a small refrigerator and cooled down fairly quickly. The beds were quite comfortable, and our children went to sleep quickly (always a plus). Hallway noise wasn't too noticeable.

We used the pool the next morning, and our children had a great time. There was a small toddler pool, and a larger pool that included a shallow "river" connecting the pool to the slide pool. The depth of the water rarely exceeded 3 1/2 feet, which was perfect for our boys. There also was an adult-only pool, which we didn't use, but it was sufficiently separated from the family pool to offer solitude. The website indicated that children's play programs were available (you had to register at least 24 hours in advance, which wasn't convenient), but we didn't choose to partake. Although we saw the children's' play center, we never saw it in use. There was an outdoor water moonwalk that was operating for children, but again we didn't use that (our children never wanted to leave the pool). Attendants came around periodically to take food and drink orders. There didn't appear to be any lifeguards, but there was always a staff member at the top of the water slide to ensure that there was an orderly descent.

In the evenings, there was an outdoor fire for people to make 'smores. In addition, a different children's movie was screened outdoors each evening.

Six Flags was located nearby, at the bottom of the hill where the resort was located. The hotel offered a free shuttle to Six Flags, as well as to a nearby shopping center. There also was a golf course located next door. There was another shopping center located a short car ride away, and the resort provided easy access to the outer ring road encircling San Antonio (to avoid having to travel through the downtown area). As a result of being so far out of town, however, it was a fair car ride to get to the Riverwalk and other downtown attractions (eg, the Alamo).

With 2 young children, we opted not to eat in the hotel restaurants, but instead used room service for dinner. This was not cheap, but it was reasonably quick. The resort was isolated, so there was nothing within walking distance. However, there was easy access to 2 separate highways, offering quick access to other restaurants, shops, etc. And there is a Starbucks located in the hotel.

The hotel itself was beautiful and well-maintained. The thing that struck me the most, however, was how friendly the staff were, without exception. Our stay was after the summer season had ended, so it wasn't very crowded, and this may have allowed the staff to be more relaxed. However, I've never stayed anywhere (other than a Disney cruise ship) where every staff member greeted you so cheerfully. Although there probably are less expensive places to stay near San Antonio (this was our first trip there), we'd stay at La Cantera again in a heartbeat
