We spent one night at the La Casa Fitzcarraldo hotel, which had more of a feeling of a guest home than a hotel. We chose the hotel because of the history in the making of the movie Fitzcarraldo movie. In fact, we met and spoke with the owner of the hotel, Mr. Walter Saxer, who was the film producer for the movie, and a director. He was a wealth of information regarding the making of the movie and an interesting man to speak with. There were also photos hung outside by the pool, of the people involved in the making of the movie.
The hotel/guest home is located in the midst of the hustle and bustle of Iquitos, but once inside the doors to the property, we were surrounded by a lovely garden and trees, leaving behind the noise of the city. The hotel had a lovely looking pool, although we did not swim in it that evening. We were able to order a dinner at the hotel, which was delicious, and Pisco Sours which we came to enjoy on our Peruvian trip. Of note, there are several pictures of a monkey on the property, that we noticed in the website, but when we asked, they no longer have any monkey.
We stayed in the blue room which apparently Mick Jagger had stayed stayed in during the original making of the Fitzcarraldo movie. The bed was comfortable, although we wish we had requested another couple of pillows, as there were only two old pillows on the bed. The towels were also a bit old-looking and frayed on the edges, but they worked. The shower was large in size and had good water pressure. There was a small refrigerator in the room with cold water, soft drinks and drinks for sale. While there seemed to be some noise initially, from a nearby party or people at the bar area, all was quiet after 10, and we heard no city noise, even with our windows open. Breakfast was included and was filling. There was also a very friendly black lab, who very much enjoyed our attention and treats.
The only challenge that we had experienced, was in making our reservations at the La Casa Fitzcarraldo. I had sent several emails in both English and Spanish, requesting a reservation and with some questions, but did not receive any response. We finally used Expedia for a reservation, and did not have any issues when we checked in. We are grateful to the lovely staff for their hospitality when we were there, and the delicious dinner.
