Overview

Lake McDonald Lodge, Cabins, and Motor Inn is a viable option for families vacationing in Glacier National Park.

Built in 1914, the lodge is an excellent choice for families who can go a few days unattached from the digital world. If your family isn’t willing to unplug for a few days, we suggest staying elsewhere.

Though this 100-room property lacks some relatively common amenities found in more modern hotels and lodges (high-speed Internet, excellent cell phone service and air conditioning, to name a few), it more than makes up it by offering clean, cozy, rustic and affordable lakefront lodging that puts families in tough with nature and one other.

Guests may choose to stay in the Main Lodge, The Motor Inn or The Cabins. Each unit offers different varieties of double and twin beds, alarm clocks, telephones, fans, private baths, daily maid service and more. We recommend cabins for families, as they’re located away from the main lodge and right on the lake, making for a wonderfully tranquil and unique family experience.

Onsite dining options include Russell’s Fireside Dining Room in the Main Lodge, which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Worth visiting

It's a great place to take a break. Lake McDonald is beautiful. If you have time take the boat ride around the lake. If you don't take the boat ride it's a 40 minute stop just to relax -- sit inside or outside the lodge -- and purchase some tourist stuff if you have more gifts to buy. Biggest challenge is finding a place to park during July and August. Good luck. It does have a restaurant but I have my dinner outside the park at the end of the day.

Beautiful lodge in West Glacier

We stayed just one night in the lodge on a cute cabin right next to the lodge and the lake. The next day was the last day the GTTSR was open on the west side to Logan Pass due to road construction closings. We took the Red Bus took that day from the lodge to the Pass and back.
Cabin was very nice and all staff were helpful. Would have loved to stay another night but needed to get to the east side because of the road closing.
