When California began as a state, Monterey served as the original capital in 1849. Perhaps it was the beauty of the California coastline or the moderate temperatures that made the area home to the state capitol and today receives hordes of visitors wanting to explore its hilly terrain. The Legendary Big Sur is one of the most desired places to visit, with a drive along the Pacific Coast Highway's winding ocean cliff lanes. The Charming Carmel-by-the-Sea captivates with its European feel, while the Carmel valley is home to Central California vineyards producing fantastic wines. Pebble Beach's draw is its rolling green golf courses, and finally, the city that gave the bay its name, Monterey, is a launching pad for seafaring adventures, encounters with wildlife and a historic past captured in writing by the great John Steinbeck.

Although the area welcomes families of all ages, we recommend Monterey Bay and its sites for families with older children who can enjoy the outdoor splendors and handle rigorous hikes and bike rides, as well as the waves of the Pacific on whale-watching and fishing excursions. Yes, little kids will love the aquarium and the beaches, so you cannot go wrong if you prefer to travel with your younger ones.
