Naples and the Amalfi Coast are in Campania, Italy's southern region. This is where pizza was invented, and we challenge you to eat pizza in any part of Italy and not find the pizza from Naples to be the best you've ever had! Naples itself is a sprawling city that some find a bit crass. It's crowded and a bit dirty, but Naples lies on the Mediterranean, and along The Med are some of the prettiest coastal towns, nestled into cliffs and overlooking the bluest of blue waters.

Drive the coastline along the Amalfi Coast for harrowing twists and turns that hug the cliffs, with one side a drop to the sea and the other, rocky mountains. You may squirm as busses and mopeds maneuver around the roads you are traveling, but you'll be in awe of the views.

Climbing up the mountains are terrace farms and gardens, where lemons grow as big as melons and olive trees seem to grow like weeds. Fish are caught from the sea you are admiring, and the combination of fresh seafood and fresh ingredients make eating in Campania a delight.

Kids will enjoy time on the many beaches from Sorrento to Amalfi, and families can find boat rentals plentiful. Renting a small craft for a day on the water means finding private coves and beaches you can only access by water, as well as lunch spots that are accessible only by boat. A visit to the isle of Capri is also a highlight of a visit to this region.

For history buffs, visits to Pompeii and Herculaneum, which were destroyed by the Mount Vesuvius volcano eruption in 79 AD, are a must. Excavations of the towns have uncovered eerie preservations of life in these cities, once upon a time. The eruption surprised Pompeii and people didn't have time to escape, while in Herculaneum, the ash falling the next day is what destroyed their city.

As this is southern Italy, this is where Italians like to spend their summers and the area becomes quite busy with both tourists and sunbathers wanting to relax on the beaches. With the beauty of the area, it's easy to see why so many make their way here every year.
