After years of “stay cations” and a purse-buckling recession, it looks like this weekend will release a record number of travelers. AAA predicts this weekend’s travel will be the second-highest holiday travel period since 2000.

AAA predicts this Memorial Day Weekend total travel will be 1.5 percent more than 2013, with 36.1 million anticipated to travel. More than 80 percent are predicted to travel by car. AAA attributes the spike to come following a harsh winter and a greater desire to celebrate the unofficial start of summer.
