Carnival Corporation, the parent company of Carnival, Holland America, Costa, Cunard and P&O cruise lines, has opened its destination port built exclusively for its Caribbean cruises. Amber Cove welcomed its first ship Oct. 6 when Carnival Victory docked in the new Dominican Republic port.

The new $85-million port is located on the northern coast of the island near Puerto Plata. It will serve as the home base for Carnival’s new Fathom ship, which launched earlier this year as the first volunteerism cruise, taking U.S. passengers to Cuba. Amber Cove is a 30-acre entertainment and shopping hub, with an exclusive passenger relaxation area with multiple swimming pools and lounge chairs. The port can accommodate two cruise ships and up to 10,000 people per day, and will house ships as cruise passengers enjoy shore excursions and the port.
