A new survey conducted by Bank of America highlighted trends in spring break travel for families.

In the survey of more than 14,000 people, only 46 percent of families are planning to take a spring vacation this year. The reasons? Managing budgets, coordinating schedules and choosing destinations can be difficult, according to those surveyed.

Of those traveling, 77 percent of families plan to vacation in domestic locations for spring break, with 63 percent of families traveling by car in order to do so.

The top attractions revealed no surprises to parents, with beaches and theme parks topping the survey at 65 and 64 percent, respectively. Landmarks/monuments followed at 53 percent, national parks at 48 percent, and museums and cultural sites at 44 percent.

When picking a destination, families first look for those destinations that are family friendly, easily accessible and have many tourist attractions. They also look for positive reviews and high recommendations, as well as familiarity with the destination.

Most of the spring break travel budget is used on the accommodations and transportation, at 47 and 32 percent, respectively, with food and activities falling below 10 percent of the costs.
