Yellowstone National Park’s largest lodgings, Canyon Lodge & Cabins, begins a $70-million renovation this month, which will not be complete until 2016. The renovation coincides with the 2016 100th anniversary of the National Park Service.

Canyon Lodge & Cabins currently operates 400 cabins and two lodge buildings. The lodge operator Xanterra Parks & Resorts will begin removing nearly 200 Frontier cabins this spring in preparation of the new construction of five new lodge buildings. The new buildings will house a total of 409 guest rooms across multi-floors, blending into the park surroundings with sustainable design and stone and wood features. Three lodges are expected to open next year, with the remaining two opening in 2016. They will complement the Cascade and Dunraven lodges, which both opened in the 1990s.

The project will also include the renovation of the Canyon Lodge dining facilities, and the addition of walking and biking paths to link the Canyon Village complex with the North Rim Drive and lodging area.

Construction must take place in summer and fall due to the high amounts of snow received during winter and spring months. If planning to visit the area, contact the lodge with concerns about construction.
