Overview

With a name like ‘Old Harbor,’ you probably wouldn’t expect an urbane getaway, but that’s what you can expect at this luxurious, dare we say, cosmopolitan hotel in the maritime district of downtown South Haven. Numerous rooms can easily accommodate families of four, if a classy hotel experience is what you and your kids crave during your time on the west coast of Michigan. Gaze out upon boats and watch the sunset in dramatic fashion, but keep in mind there’s no pool.

most pleasant surprise

Reading reviews, I was a little nervous but very pleased with everything about Old Harbor. Seems it is very important to express what you want in a room and its location within the complex as there are varying options. We enjoyed room 7. It was quite large with a very accommodating kitchenette and pub table. The bathroom was very large and nicely updated and the shower was absolute tops!! It has 2 closets outside the bathroom entrance instead of dressers which made it very nice to organize things and not worry about forgetting something in the back of a drawer. Also a great King bed with nightstands on both sides. It had a cute tiny balcony with only room for 2 chairs facing each other. The view was quite nice although it does overlook the top of a riverboat restaurant which may be noisy and lacking privacy in season. The rooms are located in various buildings which I was a little concerned about at first but did enjoy ours which was in an adjacent building to the main one and over top of quaint little shops. Yes, we had to walk up stairs to get to the room which were not really inviting but no deal breaker. The location is fantastic for shopping, eating and amazing sunsets just down the block. Parking can be a bear but in late October, we seldom had trouble finding a close spot on the street or a free lot just across the street. There was MAJOR street repair construction (as in complete replacement) just across from the hotel but it did not interfere with our enjoyment, just would have been nice to get a heads up from them. The weather was absolutely awful but if you have to get stuck in your room this is a great one to be stuck in or there is a nice movie theater just up the street from them.

Love it!

We stayed in a Harbor View room (room 21). It was a great size and very clean. The balcony was worth every penny. Watching the boats come in was great and you have very little noise from the surrounding bars. It's also so close to the main downtown area and the beach. My husband and I had a blast!
