A Slice of Paradise

by Amanda R

If your idea of paradise is a gorgeous tropical island framed by a healthy reef teeming with amazing animals, then this is the place for you. South Water Caye is a tiny island about forty minutes (in a very bumpy boat) off the coast from Dangriga. This island is in a marine reserve. One of the things that impressed me most about Belize is how they have taken care of their wild places. In fact a short boat ride can take you to a tiny island which houses a Smithsonian marine research station where friendly marine biologists explained their conservation projects to us. There are only very few cottages, so it is private and peaceful. My daughter and I were actually the only guests during much of our five night stay and got to experience what it would be like to have our own island???? All the cottages are pretty but I believe ours was the best – Heron’s Hideaway. It backs right onto the water on the reef side of the island, so a warm, salty breeze is always blowing (no need for a hair dryer). The little porch (with hammocks) out the back is surrounded by mangroves where little red crabs and some gorgeous bird visitors can be seen. Beautiful pelicans swoop down all the time and there are patch reefs only a short swim from the beach. There is also more impressive guided snorkeling to be had by boat. The bugs were not too bad when we were there but bring plenty of repellent and gallons of sunscreen. Our hosts were always warm and friendly. The food is simple but plentiful and enjoyable. I really can’t say enough good things about this place – it’s a jewel.
