Once known as a bustling steel town, bearing names such as the "Steel City" and the "City of Bridges," Pittsburgh's landscape has done a major overhaul. It's now a mecca for museums, parks, foodie delights, kid-friendly attractions and cultural institutions.

As the second-largest city in Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh has something for just about everyone. The city's sports, cultural and industrial history run just as deep as its three connecting rivers. Families can start their exploration at the newly renovated Point State Park, a 36-acre green space on the water's edge that houses the Fort Pitt Museum and the Block House, a national historic monument. Here, the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers meet to form the Ohio River, all spectacularly visible from the historic Duquesne Incline where families can ride century old cable cars. Families love the walking trails, water sports and recreation available along Pittsburgh's riverfronts, especially the Good Ship Lollipop. This hour-long narrated riverboat tour on the Gateway Clipper Fleet is a popular family attraction and a kid favorite.

Bearing the nickname, "Kidsburgh," Pittsburgh has dozens of attractions for kids ranging from the historic Kennywood amusement park to the educational Carnegie Museum of Natural History and a half-dozen other kid-friendly museums and educational centers. With low-cost (and a few free) attractions, Pittsburgh is an affordable vacation destination for families, too.
