Great Stay for a Weekend Trip with Dogs

by Richard H

My wife and I stayed here for two nights over a weekend on our first trip with our dogs. The hotel was perfect for a dog-friendly family vacation.

The location is a quiet neighborhood along an access road. It's listed as an airport hotel, but honestly I don't even know where the airport was, since we drove down. The isolated location is a benefit, since you don't see a lot of extraneous traffic around the hotel. An adjacent apartment complex has a nice trail around a pond behind the buildings, which made a perfect dog walk. And even though the hotel is in a quiet area, you're not more than a few minutes from a ton of restaurants and across the road from a mall, so you have immediate access to lots of things.

The building was well-kept with friendly staff and the usual perks of a Residence Inn. The free breakfast was decent, although if we were staying there for a long vacation I'm sure I would want something different eventually. There was ample parking.

Our room was perfect for keeping the dogs in. We were on the end of the building, right next to an exit, so we had quick access to the outside for potty breaks. The rooms also had thick walls, so we had no problems with noises outside triggering the dogs. And the suite room design meant we could keep the dogs in the bedroom, behind a closed door, so they wouldn't bug people by barking too much. Compared to other hotels in the area, the pet fees were a good deal, especially if you are going to stay for a while ($100 flat fee, regardless of how long you stay, compared to a price per dog per night at some other places).

If we're back in the Newport/Williamsburg area with the dogs again, we'd probably return to this hotel. It served our purposes admirably.

OK stay

I flew into PHF for business and my company put me up here for two nights.

The lobby and main area are nicely appointed, and staff was always friendly. The room itself, while a little worn, was large and clean. Breakfast is the only food I had there, and it was perfectly fine by hotel chain standards.

The only real downside for me was that I could smell bug spray in the bathroom, where the main vent was - presumably they were spraying in other rooms and the smell was getting into the vent. I’m as paranoid as anybody about bugs, but I didn’t see any during my stay, just that smell. It seems a little unfair to downgrade the rating because of their active attempts to spray and control for pests, but it put a damper on things for me.

I would stay here again, but it wouldn’t be my first choice in the area.
