I have stayed at many Marriotts and I would rate this one as one of the worst. We arrived exhausted and when we got to our room it was never cleaned. We did not realize it until my daughter found a used feminine napkin laying on the back of the toilet while she was in the bathroom. Then we started looking around and realized they have never cleaned the room. We had to go across the large hotel grounds to get a new room. And then back across the campus to our new room. The new room was clean but still smelled musty and was old with outdated furnishing. The staff was rude and arrogant. They promised to return the Marriott points used but never followed through. I would definitely not stay here
The Residence Inn La Jolla has been there for a while, close to La Jolla and I5, shopping mall and food outlets in walking distance in a safe neighborhood. It still reflects the old style of Residents Inn, giving the feeling of a village with duplex houses.
The upkeep and maintenance is good though - we witnessed work going on everywhere (without disturbance) and liked the laid-back atmosphere of the place. Rooms facing to the streets literally surrounding the property may be more noisy than our room close to the pool/whirlpool area.
Our room had a very comfortable King Size Bed and pullout sofa (Queen) that might not work well for two. The kitchen had a stove, microwave, dishwasher, fridge and drip-coffee machine and plenty of china and cutlery. The bathroom was large enough. although I would have liked a walk-in shower more than a bath-tub with a curtain.
We particularly liked the social nights - a lovely event to meet fellow travelers and enjoy a Burger & Beer or Mexican Food from the truck.
The lobby has a little store for needful things and the staff was always friendly and helpful.
The only downside is that you will need a car if you plan to get around in San Diego. if you plan to stay in La Jolla, the public busses and / or Uber should do. Sadly, they started to charge for parking.
