Asakusa Okonomiyaki Sometaro

2-2-2 Nishiasakusa, Taito 111-0035, Tokyo Prefecture

Okonomiyaki, delicious savory pancakes studded with seafood and vegetables, may be one of the least well-known dishes in Japanese cuisine — but that doesn’t make it any less tasty. After visiting the Senso-ji temple in Asakusa, check out this very old-school eatery, housed in a cute little wooden cottage. You’ll need to take your shoes off and sit on tatami mats on the floor around a large table to enjoy the fare. You can play chef and make your very own okonomiyaki on the piping hot griddle in the center of the table — or let your skilled waitress handle cooking duty and serve you up a perfect pancake.

Note: This may not be the best choice for a rambunctious toddler, given the heat of the griddle at the center of the table.
