Big Texan Steak Ranch

7701 E Interstate 40, Amarillo, 79118-6915, TX

If you are up for an eating challenge, you have to stop at the Big Texan, home to the 72-ounce steak. The eating challenge began in 1962 when a cowboy ate four and half pounds of steak (72 ounces), a baked potato, shrimp cocktail, salad and a bread roll in one sitting. From that day forward, restaurant owner Bob “RJ” Lee declared that anyone who could eat that entire dinner would get it free.

The whole meal must be eaten in an hour, you can’t leave the table or stand up, no one else can touch the meal, and you don’t have to eat the fat. If you eat everything, it’s free; if not, you must pay for the full cost of the meal: $72.

If steak is not your thing, there are plenty of other options on the menu such as mountain oysters, sandwiches, ribs, chicken and fish. A stop at this legendary Route 66 restaurant (now located on I-40) is a must when visiting Amarillo.
