Cheater’s

Restaurant

When an owner puts his name on his restaurant in the Bahamas, you can expect good. Not that the owner is a “cheater,” but it evolved from the nickname “Cheetah” in high school, because he ran so fast.

Outside of George Town, a short way to the south, it opens daylong across the street from the bay. Typical of native cuisine restaurants, its menu changes daily according to what the fishermen bring in. The erase-board menu usually lists steam’ chicken, lobster, crack’ conch, and other seafood with a choice of traditional side dishes such as peas and rice and mac and cheese. Cheater prepares his conch fresh (live) to order — some say it’s the best on the island. He stays “flexible” for kids, so don’t be afraid to special order.
