Joe Huber’s Family Farm and Restaurant

2421 Engle Road, Starlight, 47106-8418, IN

Joe Huber’s may be across the river in Indiana, but it’s easily worth the 20-minute drive from downtown Louisville. It’s simply the most family-friendly place to eat in these parts, because it’s much, much more than a restaurant. It’s actually a working farm with a ton of activities kids will love.

Huber’s has wagon rides, a petting zoo, a cornfield maze in the fall, train rides, inflatable slides, a playground, pony rides, and a fishing pond (where you can also feed the ducks). While some activities are free, some do require a small fee. You’ll also find a farmer’s market, so you can take a taste of Huber’s home with you.

When you’re finally ready to eat, Huber’s Country Platter Dinner is the house specialty, and it’s served family style. It includes country fried chicken, Huber honey ham, fried biscuits with apple butter, country slaw, chicken and dumplings, mashed potatoes and gravy, and green beans. You can order most separately, of course, as well as other menu items, including rib-eye steak, pork chops, catfish, various sandwiches, and even lighter fare like apple walnut spinach salad. As you might expect from a farm, Huber’s uses plenty of homegrown produce in season, as well. Desserts include homemade pies and cobblers. Open every day for lunch and early dinner only (closes at 6 p.m. on Sundays and 7 p.m. weekdays).
