Rattenfangerhaus

Osterstr. 28 31785 , Hameln

No journey along the Fairy Tale Road is complete without a meal at the Rattenfangerhaus (Rat Catcher’s House), in the town of Hameln, the setting for the Pied Piper tale. Dating back to 1603, this half-timbered house is infested by rats — only in the decor, of course. This traditional Old World German restaurant houses a vast collection of Pied Piper art and memorabilia. Rats are engraved in wooden chairs, painted on walls and imbedded in colorful stained glass windows. Larger parties get to sit in the Ratskellar, the Rat Cellar, decorated with a beautiful mural of the Pied Piper story. Want to really immerse yourself in the Brothers Grimm tale? Consider ordering the rat’s tail off the menu. You’ll understand what this dish is all about when you request the English version of the menu — it’s actually a tasty meal of sliced pork. Accompany the kitsch and schnitzel with a stein of beer and you have a happy ending to your day in the town of Hameln.
