Overview

Every now and then life throws a quirky jewel your way. And if the vibe feels right, you might be in the mood to grab it and have an adventure. Take the Riverview Hotel in St. Mary’s Georgia. This hotel built in 1916 isn’t your average modern hotel overnight. It’s probably more like visiting your grandma. Still, shed expectations of what a hotel “should” be and prepare for a wondrous – albeit different — experience.

St. Mary’s sits at the bottom of the state of Georgia – just a few miles west of Florida. The town of St. Mary’s is on the continent proper with the wild Cumberland Island sitting directly in front.

The Riverview Hotel offers guestrooms in either two double beds or one queen bed. Rooms sleep two to five guests and come with a private bath, air-conditioning, cable TV, a free continental breakfast, and free Wi-Fi. The onsite restaurant serves breakfast and dinner, and prepares picnic baskets.
A ferry departs across the street from the Riverview Hotel twice daily taking visitors to the Cumberland island. The Cumberland Island beach is 18-miles long with glittering white sand dotted with sea shells. The island’s wild horses are easy to spot and sea turtles return to the island every year to lay eggs between May and September.

Come for the charm!

by betsyanded

The hotel is not new, but for charm and a sense of days past, book a stay at this property. So convenient for a trip to Cumberland Island. Matt, the gen manager, could not have been more hospitable to us offering food and water since they no longer pack picnic lunch to take to the island. Coffee and continental breakfast were great when enjoyed on the open veranda full of rocking chairs. I would definitely come back. Street construction and beautification happened to be going on, but once that is finished, should be quiet once again.
