When Julie Andrews, playing Maria von Trapp, sang her way through the streets of Salzburg, generations of Americans became instant fans of "The Sound of Music" and envisioned dancing through the gardens, fountains, cobbled streets and hills just like the von Trapp family. It is not uncommon to meander through Mirabell Gardens and hear the singing of classic songs from the film, so popular is the attraction. Alas, the story of the von Trapp family isn't quite as romantic as in the film, and the residents of Salzburg only know of the movie due to the Americans singing in their streets, but that doesn't mean the Austrian city isn't as magical as you envision.

Located at the base of the Austrian Alps, Salzburg seems like a big town more than a city. It is easy to see its most popular attractions within a day or a weekend, making it an ideal stop of tour groups arriving via bus or river boat. The town holds tight to its Bavarian roots and traditions, with many donning traditional lederhosen and dirndl in every day fashion. Its alpine location brings cooler temperatures in the summer, when the town is most visited by tourists, but if you can also leave time to head to the hills where Andrews twirled her way into our hearts, you will discover that the hills truly are alive.
