I stayed here in the off season (November) and was very impressed with the property, the rooms, the staff, the view, etc. The rooms were clean, modern, well decorated, and had unbeatable views of the ocean. I would definitely stay here again.
Shutters on the Banks is an overpriced, somewhat fixed up motel. It's location right on the beach is the main thing it has going for it. We did like the fact that we could walk right up and stroll along the ocean. The location was also pretty good for exploring both up and down the coast in the Outer Banks.
We stayed in a king room, and the room size was pretty good. We had a separate couch area and could spread out a bit. There is a small refrigerator. The bathroom was a bit small with an odd layout.
Now for the cons:
* The room had a musty smell that never went away.
* The walls provide no sound insulation whatsoever. We could hear televisions and talking in neighboring rooms constantly.
* Breakfast was disappointing with very few choices and lackluster produce. I ended up eating my own apples as theirs were bruised.
There aren't that hotels right in the Kill Devil Hills / Kitty Hawk area, but I'm certain you can find some better than Shutters on the Banks.
