The 43 miles of coastline that make up Italy's storied Amalfi Coast are a veritable playground for vacationing families. This area is full of opportunities to visit archaeological ruins, eat real Italian pizza at cozy trattorias, and dip into the dazzling blue Mediterranean. To be based close to Naples and Pompeii, yet still right there at the start of this spectacular stretch of coastline, the beautiful seaside town of Sorrento, overlooking the Gulf of Naples, is a prime spot to stay.

Accommodations run the range from the simple and familial to the downright decadent and glamorous, with hotels and inns spread across the cliffside town and overlooking the bay below.

There's a small-town beach that gets absolutely packed with people during the summer months, but luckily it's a short drive to calmer coves and bays where you can swim with the family. From Sorrento, you can easily book a day trip to visit Pompei and the nearby island of Capri or spend some hours road tripping south along the Amalfi Coast to see such legendary places as Positano, Amalfi and Ravello.
