Turks and Caicos consists of 40 islands, only eight of which are inhabited. For years Turks and Caicos was clearly off-the-beaten path, known primarily to beach aficionados and divers who explored the teeming reefs offshore. In recent years, however, the islands have been "discovered."

One of the reasons we like Turks & Caicos so much, especially Provo, is that it isn't crowded. Provo's population hovers around 32,000 and Grand Turk, the government center, has only 4,000 inhabitants. Low-rise, condo-style hotels line Grace Bay Beach and even though Grand Turk serves as a cruise port for Carnival Corporation, Cockburn Town, the capital still sports the laid-back elan.

If your family wants to wander from gorgeous Grace Bay beach -- although they may not want to -- it's easy to take day trips from Provo. Middle Caicos attracts eco-adventurers to its above ground caves. Flocks of pink flamingoes inhabit the tidal flats on North Caicos, 12 miles from Provo, and Little Water Cay serves as an iguana sanctuary.

Turks and Caicos rewards families with a slow-paced, beach getaway that comes with great snorkeling and diving, as well as kayaking and other adventures.
