In Need of an Update

by drosen85

Westin is a really nice hotel for sure. The location is great (for those who need to be in the shopping mall), the beds are comfortable, the executive lounge has great salsa (like really great salsa).

But the property definitely has that 80s feel. Lots of beiges and browns -- and nothing that really jumps out at you and says "Wow, it is super cool to be here, I can't wait to tell all my friends about the Westin Galleria."

But not all hotels can or should be awe-inspiring. If you need somewhere to stay, and not looking to spend too much money, the hotel fits the bill. If you want a more unique, luxurious or quintessentially Texas experience, keep searching.

Ticks all the boxes

Have stayed at this ultra-conveniently located hotel in the past, but a recent visit was the first since the hotel's renovation. Houston is a tricky hotel city. Many of the far more expensive hotels (Four Seasons, St. Regis) are disappointing examples of their brands and in desperate need to top to bottom makeovers. The Westin Galleria delivers on many fronts and for a remarkably affordable price. The rooms are large, quiet, and have exceedingly comfortable beds; service is good, there's a great fitness center with brand new equipment, and there's easy, free parking (I can't really understand the reviews here knocking the parking--it is a cinch. I was there for 4 nights and was always able to get a spot steps from the hotel). The bathtubs in the rooms were not replaced during the renovation, and are an odd note in an otherwise pleasant, refreshed bathroom. While the renovation created a restful decor in the rooms, the lobby is a surprisingly unwelcoming, anonymous feeling space. Also, the access to the pool is so stark that you almost feel like you've gone out the wrong door. Certainly Westin could soften up what is a barren rooftop? Starbucks, located in the Galleria, is a handy 1 1/2 min. walk from the hotel. All in all, unless you're willing to pony up at least $150-$200 more per night for the Post Oak Hotel (see my review), this is the best option in Houston given the value, renovated, large rooms, free parking, proximity to the inner loop and good service.
