Although we are not beachy people, coming from an island ourselves, we were intrigued by the deals we were getting at various ALL INCLUSIVE resorts during the shoulder season - KIDS STAY and EAT FREE is always an eye catcher, and that various more +alcoholic refeshements were thrown in for the adults was a plus in our books! We booked at DREAMS RESORT in LA ROMANA, and had a fabulous time. we flew from Aruba to SDQ in one hour ( of course with some delay given the fact that you are traveling within the caribbean islands) and had to drive another 2 hrs to get to the hotel. But we booked a private bus transfer and the fun started already on our drive over.

Our party consisted of 4 couples and 7 kids, and that proved to be a magic number. During the days we lazed around the pool, while the kids played with each other or joined the other kids at the hotels excellent kids club. Both the pool and beach had great beach toys like water trampoline and a aqua rock climb. So while the adults played cards and sipped our pina colada's the kids frolicked in the water. Every evening we selected one of the 8 Specialty restaurants for dinner and arrived early so we could sit the kids on one table and the adults on the other. As the kids entertained themselves, we were able to hold adult conversations during dinner (what a treat!) And because the kids were so tired after a full day of beach, we easily put them to bed after dinner and took turns heading off to the casino or ballroom dancing at the lobby bar (hmmm, that was the only lowlight of the vacation, we expected to learn merengue (= local dance) and the ladies hoped to meet a Patrick Swayze kinda guy to teach us ( a la Dirty dancing :-)
It was to date the most relaxing vacation I had in a group and with my kids and everyone enjoyed it thoroughly! Needless to say the hotel was wonderful, food excellent and great staff! Definitely worth a repeat visit in our books.

After the referal and the research we headed to Dominican Republic. Other than Jetblue's scam at airport checkin to get $30 extra per person for seats we already paid for the flight was thankfully uneventful. The hotel's van was at the airport more +waiting for us. The ride to the resort was almost 2 hours. Like a tour of the country. It was a great welcome to DR.

When we arrive at the hotel we were greeted with champange and immediately checked in.
We hit our suite changed and hit the pool. The grounds are beautiful the staff members are friendly fun and very helpful. The food was good, drinks were GREAT. After a couple days my son met lots of kids and opened up to the teen club and activities.

We missed the bike tour but a staff member took us anyway.the staff was always very accomodating. It rained severly for a couple days and the activities moved from the beach and pool to where ever the guest where.

I don't like visiting the same place twice but we've decided to start a tradition and make this resort our anual family destination.

The lobby is beautiful and tastefully decorated, detailed and well kept! Each guest was greeted with champagne right from the foyer not to mention warm towels for hands - a bonus after a long bus ride from the airport.

Check-in was more +quick and painless, the concierge did a great job making sure our room was on the main floor right beside the garden pool, and in between the lobby and the beach. That might not be everyone's taste but for our energetic preschooler, this was just what we needed! Our room was clean and nicely done up. Too bad the TV remote control did not work but we're on vacation ... who cares?

There are 2 major huge pools and a 3rd one just for kids (perfect for our 4 year old) to have fun and make friends. One pool has a swim up bar and about 10 cemented bar stools where you can enjoy your first drink..and another one to go!

The white sand beach is beautiful but unfortunately not enough lounge chairs ... other guests seemed to be "reserving" seating since there were lots of orphaned flip flops and stray magazines just not people to match! Beach towels were plentiful though and we quickly learned that to grab one or 2 lounge chairs you have to come really early and throw a towel/magazine to claim it. If your are lucky enough to snag one of these precious lounge chairs then you're in heaven because the view of the white sand beach and blue water is so amazing that it simply takes your breath away....prefect breeze on a quiet beach and maybe even under a canopy.

Now saving the best for last ... let's talk about food - yes my favorite topic :-) There are about 1/2 a dozen restaurants and one main buffet restaurant. The buffet restaurant has lots of variety and choices and trust me you won't go hungry. I cannot say the other restaurants were as good for example the Italian, Asian and French Bistro were not authentic and lacked the flavor one would have expected. The one restaurant that really stands out is the outside Dominican restaurant on the beach which was delicious and we had dinner there twice in our one week stay. The service, food and atmosphere were great but most importantly the food is really delicious and portion size is generous!

Would I recommend this hotel? Yes, overall our experience was positive ... unless, of course, you need a beach side lounge chair!
