The food at the Ritz-Carlton is generally good and typically pricey so it's nice that the resort makes some concessions for families. Children under 5, with a paying adult, eat free in all of the Ritz-Carlton Grand Cayman's restaurants. Children ages 5 to 12 can find such favorites as chicken fingers, fish fingers, spaghetti and meat balls, hamburger, pasta for about $4 to $8. The hotel also offers 24-hour room service. To save money, many families eat some meals off-property.
At the Cupboard, the on property mini-market, you can grab take away salads, sandwiches, fruit, cookies, bottles of water and other goodies as well as small gifts. The store sells "This is Paradise, Dis is Cayman," a children's book introducing the island's delights authored by a local woman and her child. For young kids, the book's a cute read, showing stick figure drawings of the island's chickens, parrots, iguanas. Readers also learn how to say "cock-a-doodle-do" in 12 languages. Another nice treat: hypoallergenic, glycerin soap shaped like turtles or ladybugs.
Periwinkle is another good bet for family-friendly meals. The open-air eatery on the resort side near the pool serves pizza, pasta, salmon and offers a children's menu. Every night, Periwinkle hosts free outdoor family movies in a sandy patch near the restaurant. Ever eat with your toes in the pool? With advance notice, Periwinkle will set up a table on the pool's wide ledge for no extra charge. It's a fun way to enjoy a really casual dinner. The resort can only handle one "pool" table per night.
Bar Jack, the eatery between the sea and the ocean pool serves sandwiches, hamburgers, hot dogs and other beach fare for lunch. 7 has a patio overlooking the oceanfront pool as well as an indoor space. During the day the cafe serves breakfast and lunch and in the evening the space morphs into the steakhouse 7 Prime Cuts & Sunsets. For lunch, 7 serves salads, sandwiches, burgers as well as a few grilled entrees. The conch chowder is tasty and so is the mahi-mahi wrap. A burger costs U.S. $16.
The property's signature, fine dining restaurant is Blue by Eric Ripert, an AAA five Diamond restaurant. At the Ritz-Carlton Grand Cayman the top chef known for New York's Le Bernardin serves seafood with flair. Prices are high and the food is best appreciated by families with older teenagers and adult children.
