Overview

Sitting in the heart of Big Bend National Park, this beautiful desert lodge is the only accommodation within the park’s borders. Families will be most interested in their rustic stone cottages, which can sleep up to six people on three double beds. There’s no phone and no TV, but you do get a microwave and coffee maker. Free Wi-Fi is available in the main lodge. You can eat all of your meals at the Chisos Mountains Lodge Restaurant and Patio, which has one of the most spectacular views in the state of Texas, or grab some groceries in the Basin Convenience Store. As you drive through the park, you’ll find shops and restaurants near the other visitor’s centers.

The Chisos Mountains Lodge is in the center of Big Bend National Park, with the nearest town, Terlingua, about 30 miles away. Terlingua Ghost Town is a fun place to visit for part of a day. You can take a self-guided walk among the ruins of the old mining town, then stop in for lunch at the Starlight Theater Restaurant and Saloon. But save your time for the national park, which has miles of scenic hiking trails to explore. One unique experience that can’t be matched anywhere else lies 30 miles to the east of your lodge. Inside the park itself is the Boquillas Border Crossing, allowing you to cross the Rio Grande into Mexico. Once you’re on the other side, it’s a short walk to the tiny town of Boquillas, where the locals are friendly and the souvenirs are cheap. The town boasts two restaurants, both serving simple, authentic Mexican food. Stay for a meal, or stay all day. It’s an adventure your kids will be talking about for a long time. On your visit to Big Bend National Park, it’s tough to beat having a place to stay in the heart of the park, where nature trails pass right by your room and adventure is just down the road. The Chisos Mountains Lodge is a memorable choice for your family vacation to Texas.

Convenient to entire park

by lilela

The Chisos Mountain Lodge, while convenient to the entire Big Bend National Park area, has some disappointments. The dated motel was FULL of flies...all over the ceiling in rooms at night and all over the dining room at noon; the staff at check-in and one of the waiters in the restaurant were accomplished liars. Check-in clerk told us we were the last ones to check in (at 3 p.m.) so we could not have two rooms side-by-side; we watched 4 couples check in after us on that side of the lodge! One of the waiters said there were no tables next to the windows; three WERE vacant and he would not allow us to sit there! BAD business! Other than these annoyances, we did enjoy our stay because all of the guests were friendly on the trails, the food was excellent (as well as the "only option within two hours" for dining). Also, a/c units are gurgling; bring a room fan to drown out that noise. If the staff were trained to be honest and if they'd eradicate the flies, it would be much better.

Finally got a room here

We have tried to get a reservation here for years and finally snagged a room. It's a great stay. We stayed in the Casa Grande building. The rooms were not fancey but were clean and comfortable with a balcony overlooking the mountains. Unfortunately, it was too cold to use the balcony but we spotted four bears out our window the morning we were leaving. I told my daughter who always goes to New Mexico for vacations to try this place out.
